Use AAMC practice materials as the source of truth, then add a correction layer

Do not try to replace official practice

For MCAT students, AAMC practice materials have a special role because AAMC is the test developer. A serious prep system should respect that. The goal is not to pretend a third-party tool is more official than official material.

The useful product idea is a correction layer: after you finish official-style practice, you need a place to record why points were lost, what rule repairs the miss, and what kind of practice should happen next.

Official material gives the signal. The correction layer turns the signal into a plan.

The review layer should capture more than right and wrong

If your AAMC review sheet only says correct or incorrect, it is leaving too much value behind. A wrong answer should be tagged by cause. A right answer should still be checked for fragile reasoning when confidence was low.

The strongest review notes are short because they are structured. You should be able to scan a week of misses and see the repeated failure modes without rereading every passage.

• Concept miss: the required idea was missing or confused.
• Passage miss: the evidence was present but not used correctly.
• Distractor miss: the wrong answer matched a tempting but incomplete rule.
• Timing miss: the process changed because the clock or fatigue changed.

What to write after an official-style miss

A useful review entry has four parts. It names the question environment, the failure mode, the correction rule, and the next action. That is enough detail to improve without turning review into an endless diary.

For example, a CARS miss might become: dense humanities passage, author stance drift, I answered from local tone instead of main claim, next drill is three passages where I write the claim before answer choices. That is actionable.

• Environment: section, passage type, topic, figure load, or author stance.
• Failure mode: what broke in the answer process.
• Correction rule: one reusable instruction for next time.
• Next action: one drill, one review block, or one content repair.

Save official resources for when review quality is high

Many students burn through the best official-style practice before their review system is strong. That creates a bad trade: they get a score, but they do not extract enough learning from the misses.

A better sequence is to build the correction loop early with mixed practice and targeted drills, then bring in official materials when your review process can actually convert the data into changes.

The scarce resource is not just official practice. It is official practice plus a review process good enough to use it.
