MCAT Timing
The MCAT is a stamina test disguised as a knowledge test.
Most MCAT score drops happen in the last twenty minutes of a section. This guide provides per-passage budgets by section, the flag-and-return rule that saves the most points, and the stamina training plan for a 7.5-hour test day.
- Know your per-passage budget for each section.
- Flag and return early — do not marinate.
- Train stamina before your final two weeks.
Budgets
Every section has its own pacing math. Memorize it.
Knowing your budget in real time means you never have to compute it under stress. Section pacing should feel automatic by test day.
- Chem/Phys: 10 passages + 15 discretes over 95 minutes — roughly 8-9 minutes per passage.
- CARS: 9 passages over 90 minutes — roughly 10 minutes per passage.
- Bio/Biochem: same structure as C/P — treat as 8-9 minutes per passage.
- Psych/Soc: same structure — but aim for 7-8 minutes to bank time.
Flag Rules
Skip early, return with fresh eyes.
Most timing loss comes from marinating on hard questions. The 90-second rule is the single most valuable habit you can build.
- If you have not committed by 90 seconds, flag and skip.
- Return with 10-15 minutes remaining, in one clean pass.
- Never leave a question blank — always guess before moving on.
A wrong answer costs the same as a blank. Never gift points to timing.
Stamina
Practice under real conditions, or discover on test day that you cannot.
The MCAT is 7.5 hours including breaks. Score drops in section 3 and section 4 are usually stamina failures, not knowledge failures.
- Weekly full-length starting week 8, with real breaks.
- Eat and hydrate exactly as you would on test day.
- Simulate a 6-7am start twice before your real test date.
Diagnosis
Look at where in the section your accuracy drops.
If your last passage is consistently your worst, your problem is pacing or stamina — not content.
- Track per-passage accuracy across full-lengths.
- Note where flagged questions cluster — beginning, middle, or end.
- Adjust your practice to match the failure pattern.
