MCAT Retake

A retake without a different plan usually produces the same score.

Retaking the MCAT can help — but only if the second prep is meaningfully different from the first. This guide covers when a retake makes sense, what admissions committees see, and the specific changes that produce actual score improvement on a second attempt.

Decision

Retake only if you can explain why the second attempt will be different.

Committees care about improvement, not attempts. If nothing about your approach will change, a second attempt is likely to reproduce the first.

  • Was the first attempt taken when you were ready by practice FLs?
  • Did test-day anxiety, illness, or logistics cause a clear drop?
  • Have you identified the specific weak sections that dragged the score?

Different Prep

The second prep must attack the specific reason for the first score.

Generic 'study harder' plans do not work on retakes. Diagnose first, then rebuild the plan around the diagnosis.

  • Stamina issue: more full-lengths under strict conditions.
  • Content gap: targeted content rebuild in the weak subject.
  • Reasoning trap: dedicated CARS or discrete reasoning drills.
  • Timing panic: pacing rules practiced on every timed set.

Doing more Anki cards in the second prep is not a different plan — it is the same plan with more cards.

Admissions

What medical schools see when you retake.

Most US MD and DO schools see every MCAT attempt from the last few years. Policies on how they use them vary — but improvement is generally viewed positively.

  • Some schools take the highest score, some average, some look at the trend.
  • A significant improvement (5+ points) is generally viewed favorably.
  • A retake with a lower or flat score is genuinely harmful.

Timing

Give yourself a real runway between attempts.

A rushed retake usually produces a similar or worse score. Plan for a meaningful gap and use it well.

  • Minimum 3 months between attempts for most students.
  • Use the first month to diagnose and rebuild the plan.
  • Use months 2-3 to execute the new plan.
